For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))
Testing the new pavement ready for Christmas

Us good people of Melksham find it hard to understand why the replacement of the footpaths beside the road take so long ... something like six weeks for each stretch, with traffic diverted away from the town centre for that period with a detrimental effect on local businesses. And it seems that there were very rarely more than a couple of blokes working on the footpath at any time during those many weeks.

It has been suggested that the contract for the work was let to the cheapest bidder, irrespective of the economic effects of the slowness; signs saying "businesses open as usual" displayed a lack of knowledge on the part of the contractors - the closure has meant that businesses have not been able to operate as normal.

We were disappointed to see that - within a few weeks of the works being done - some of the new paving was cracked outside what is now PoundStretcher (ex Woollies) and replaced by tarmac; new paving has been put in there now.

Walking through Melksham at lunchtime today - Sunday 31st October - I was interested to see them load-testing the new pavement outside the Stroud and Swindon and Boots with this tractor and trailer. ;-) ... I hope the new paving stones on this side are strong enough to take it!

Continuing on, I noted how - even on a Sunday - the roads are busy to the extent of there being a long queue at the lights. And that's in spite of the shops being mostly closed - just a few of the branches of chains open - none of the independent single shops. Perhaps there's a lesson in there that tells us why they've succeeded in becoming chains ...

Can you believe that the Christmas lights are going up already? Melksham's Christmas lights - both in the town centre and Longford Road - make the town really special. It feels early - but I'm glad to be able to end what's bit of a depressing post on a happier note, and looking forward towards the festive season.
