For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

Web Deployment - General
Exercises, examples and other material relating to training module A050. This module is presented on Private Courses and Specially Run Courses only

Background
If you're browsing to a web site, you'll be one of thousands and all you'll need will be your browser. But if you're running the web site, you'll be running just one or two specifically configured servers and a whole host of extra modules and pieces of software to ensure that the web server is doing what YOU need for you.

I've been presenting a long series of private courses over the past two months - Ruby and Cucumber, Python, Java and C++. 3891The components of an Apache httpd / Tomcat / MySQL stack and what each does
Keep it simple and standard on the client side ... and let the server be a bit more complex. That's the philosophy of the web - and it makes sense because you'll typically have hundreds and thousand of clients - browsers - all visiting your web site which will probably be a single system - or a small ...

2595Twelve skills / knowledges needed for the design of a web site
I used to list seven knowledges / skills that a web site designer needed when I started web language courses such as Java or PHP ... but that element is no longer one that I present in quite the same way. However, an opportunity this morning to take a newcomer to providing interactive web content through ...

2099Should I maintain the programming code on my own website?
A Question from my inbox: Graham, [snip] I did lot of FORTRAN programming myself in 80's, but mostly as a tool for solving engineering problems. For about 15 months, I maintained a 27000 line raw FORTRAN code, written by 8 Ph.D. souls. In 1998, I created a passive website for myself (Bridge problems ...

2072Copyright, Portability and other nontechnical web site issues
Sometimes, I get so enmeshed in the technical that it's good to take a step back and look at our web site (and web sites in general) and say "what do we need to consider in the broader picture". I had this opportunity yesterday evening, as I ran a short session to look at some PHP issues. A couple ...

116The next generation of programmer
Ten years ago, I was teaching languages like Shell Scripting and C, but the requirement faded. As computers became steadily more powerful, standard applications were developed by a few, to be used by the many, rather than each of the many having specific code written for them. So now, I'm teaching languages ...
