For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

4259Upgrading our training systems to all the current stable versions
Programming languages are the eye of the storm in software development - the calm in the midst of the gales, an area where changes are gradual and gentle. It really needs to be that way, for who wants to pay for development of code when it's going to have a short shelf life? And so developers write ...
3053Make - automating the commands for building and installing
Coding projects (and their open source distributions) require build scripts - files of commands that convert the source code into executable programs, that install the various resultant files into place, and that can clean up the build area for a fresh build or for redistribution. The make system - ...
2201Running straight from the jar, but not from a tar
Why can you run applications in Java straight from the jar, but you'll never find mainstream applications extracting their code from a tar file? It all comes down to the different indexing structure. A tar file was originally designed as a "tape archive". So it's a sequential file that contains file ...

809What to do during a Linux build
I remember doing Solaris builds a decade ago ... hanging around for occasional questions or to change the tapes from volume 1 to 2, 2 to 3 .... the bad ole days. These days, the Linux distributions really have it sussed out; most questions are asked early on, then the majority of the build runs from ...
