For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

1600Cambidge - Tcl, Expect and Perl courses
By an amazing co-incidence, I'm in Cambridge this week ... running two 2.5 day Tcl and Expect courses, then back just across the road next week running two 2 day Perl introduction courses of the bootcamp style. As ever, there's not there's not too much time to sight-see (that is NOT what my clients ...

1000One Thousand Posts and still going strong
Can you believe it? In the two and a half years I've been writing here I have posted no fewer than ONE THOUSAND items and articles - ranging from the frivolous to the serious, and from the long to the short, and from daily life to highly technical tips. Why do I do it? Because it gives me a chance ...

2743Public Open Source Training Courses running this summer and autumn in Melksham
We've got a continuing series of Open Source courses scheduled through the summer ... as I write (late April) we still have availability on all public courses, although in one or two cases our rooms at Well House Manor are all spoken for. Python - 2 courses, each every 2 months - one for newcomers to ...

2538Open Source Training Centre and Courses for 2010
It's a while since I wrote about our training centre, and some of the things that I wrote in the past have been updated or upgraded since. So here's an up to date description, written in December 2009 telling you about our location and courses for 2010. All of our public courses are run at Well House ...

2425Weekend and Christmas Promotion - Well House Manor Hotel, Melksham
We've been busy at weekends at Well House Manor this summer - a notable increase in business, and this weekend we have returning guests once again, which is always a good sign. But we're conscious that, as autumn comes, fewer people will be coming to the area for holidays and weddings and we should ...

1545Letting new visitors know we provide training courses
I never see the most downloaded image on my website. Well - hardly ever. Here it is: Brash? Yes! Bright? Yes! It's an advertising link, to let people who arrive at our web site looking for technical information (and there are thousands a day) know that we can help them with training courses. ...

1065Graham Ellis - an Introduction
Sharing an introduction I made elsewhere - I'm not just an IT trainer - I do have other interests! Hi, I'm Graham Ellis. I've been in the "IT" industry for 30+ years, and I live in Melksham, Wiltshire. I run specialist training courses here and many of my customers (or until last December, they came) ...

1136Buffering output - why it is done and issues raised in Tcl, Perl, Python and PHP
When you go to board a plane at Heathrow, do the ground staff admit the passengers one at a time, ensuring that each is seated before the next boards, and sealing and re-opening the main doors between each? What a stupid and inefficient system that would be!! The same thing applies when you're programming ...

1318Well House Manor - feature comparison against the old place!
It's now over a year since "The Old Manor" B&B, which used to operate from the same premises as Well House Manor, closed its doors and we bought the building for our new venture. Although we changed things very quickly and opened with new facilities and new everything else in just four months - ...

2370C++, Python, and other training - do we use an IDE
A question from my inbox ... "Do you use Visual Studio, or a similar IDE". And worth a full answer, and one to be shared. 2253Walks in and around Melksham, Wiltshire
Melksham is a town with a history around every corner - a guest at the hotel on Saturday morning was asking me a few questions, and I've put together a few of the walks that I enjoy from the hotel. To show you how much there is to see on each of these walks, I have also listed out all of the places ...

I'm writing this for Melksham. And for Melksham's Businesses. Let's make Melksham a town of destination businesses. Are YOU running a business that trades in Melksham? 2052How was my web site compromised?
It looks to me as if this car has left the road and come to a sudden halt against the building, with the result that both have been somewhat damaged. But why did it happen? Was there a mechanical failure such as brakes or tyres? Did the driver fall asleep at the wheel or something distract him? ...

1912Book now for 2009
We review our prices every 1st January, and at this time of year often say something like "Book now to be assured of getting your 2009 course at the 2008 price". But this year, I can predict rather earlier than usual, that we'll be holding the majority of our prices once again. And with course prices ...

1819Calling base class constructors
In all object oriented languages, you have a facility called inheritance where you can define one type of thing ("class of object") based on another, and the newly defined class ("subclass" or "extended class") takes the initial ("base") class as it starting point. In your code for your base class, ...

1754Upgrade from PHP 4 to PHP 5 - the TRY issue
It's often the most surprising things that catch you out on language upgrades! Our new web server is running PHP 5 (5.2.6) whereas the old shared service was running PHP 4. No problem with the conversion, PHP wise, except the exchange rate page which goes to the European Central Bank's web site and ...

1663Python in an afternoon - a lecture for experienced programmers
Last Friday afternoon I was set a challenge - to present Python in three hours to a group of 20 very experience programmers who, however, knew nothing about this particular language. Another technical term? Yes - this one is a formal name for how you convert a database into Objects - applicable to any OO language (Perl, Python, PHP, Java ...)
