For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

3946Moving from a warning system to a control system - PHP, forum spammers
Our railway forum is every-popular - 30,000 visits per month (measured by Google Analytics, so that's pretty close to me saying "30,000 real visitors"), with the average visitor staying long enough to look at between five and six pages. But, alas, our strong user base also makes us a sort-after target ...

3094Setting your user_agent in PHP - telling back servers who you are
If your web page pulls information in from other sites, you'll be turning your web server into a client (browser) to those other sites - and just as your web server can identify the type of browser it's answering via the $_SERVER[HTTP_USER_AGENT] variable, so can the remote server. The default user ...

2380Object Oriented programming - a practical design example
Object Oriented coding makes enormous sense when you're looking at a medium sized or larger application - but it's a complete change of thought process for the traditional structured programmer. 2343World Flags in your PHP pages
The world's flags are often used to give a quick visible international indication of countries (sidestepping the issue I had yesterday, where I was translating into ten languages and wanted links to each other language on each page and - well - what IS the Finnish for Italy?) So I have found an Icon ...

2135What features does this visitors browser support? (PHP)
Does this visitor's web site support CSS? Is this visitor a robot? Should I send out frames? There are the sorts of questions that you may want to ask in a PHP page .... and PHP supports the get_browser function which can tell you ... or which can tell, most of the time, once you have it configured.
