Separation of the data layer from the presentation layer.
In order to keep the data apart from the display and update logic, major web applications are often written using a page presentation layer of code which then accesses services behind that code. The services will use XML, JSON, CSV or another data format to feen the page presentation layer, which may itself be further dividied into router - model - view - controller elemenst. Database access (if required) will often be within the service layer, thus ensuring that the presentatin layer isn't dependent on any one particular technology / database, and giving cache and scalability improvements.
