For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

Java module J802
Abstract Windowing Toolkit
Exercises, examples and other material relating to training module J802. This topic is presented on public course Java Extra

The Abstract Windowing Toolkit provides Java's fundamental graphics capability. You can program the AWT directly, or you can use other packages such as Swing if you want to write your applications at a higher level. The AWT is most often used for interactive applications, either for providing local GUIs or applets, but it can also be used as a painting tool for the production of .jpg or .png outputs.

3049Computer Graphics is fun - even if Java Applets are Old Hat
Applets - small applications which include a Graphic User Interface in them - are where Java started ... but they didn't grow as much as other uses of Java and these days they're something of a specialist interest - great for some Intranet applications, but not so common / practical on applications that ...

2649Length, size or capacity in Java?
You get the length of an array, but you ask about the size() of an ArrayList, and you can inquire into the capacity() of a StringBuffer. Aren't they really all the same sort of thing? Which does Java use in which circumstance? Java uses the word length when you're asking about something that can be ...

2654Java - from applets to servlets. JSPs and more
When Java first came out in the mid 1990s, its main focus was on Applets - embedded chunks of applications that ran (and still run!) in a frame within a browser's window in much the same say that an image or flash movie is framed. Java has progressed. It now has a far bigger 'market' in a whole range ...

2245Client side (Applet) and Server side (Servlet) Graphics in Java
What is the current release of Java? Is it Java 1.6, Java 2 (1.6) or Java 6? Yes it is - they're all different names for the same thing! Java started out as Java 1.0 ... and since code that would run on that Virtual Machine / written in that language will still run on today's version, it's still technically ...

1325Java - Client side applet applications as well as server side
Java started off as being a client side language - and our first (1996) course concentrated on Applets and the awt - Abstract Windowing Toolkit - to which Swing was added quite soon. But Applets took off slowly, whereas Servlets - Java as a server side language - grew by leaps and bounds and our courses ...
