For 2023 (and 2024 ...) - we are now fully retired from IT training.
We have made many, many friends over 25 years of teaching about Python, Tcl, Perl, PHP, Lua, Java, C and C++ - and MySQL, Linux and Solaris/SunOS too. Our training notes are now very much out of date, but due to upward compatability most of our examples remain operational and even relevant ad you are welcome to make us if them "as seen" and at your own risk.

Lisa and I (Graham) now live in what was our training centre in Melksham - happy to meet with former delegates here - but do check ahead before coming round. We are far from inactive - rather, enjoying the times that we are retired but still healthy enough in mind and body to be active!

I am also active in many other area and still look after a lot of web sites - you can find an index ((here))

2237Taking a pride in the community
How do you encourage young people to take a pride in their community, rather than engaging is antisocial behaviour? By encouraging their inclusiveness and by providing them with facilities. Lisa and I took a short train trip yesterday, and found ourselves at the station with eye-catching silhouettes ...

929Presenting Melksham - for a weekend away in Wiltshire
I do my best presentations when under pressure. ((Important NOTE to wife / staff / cat - DON'T pressure me every morning)). By which I mean that a new presentation or one I'm not quite prepared for even though I know my subject can, I think, sparkle with a freshness that's not there if it's been wellprepared ...

1930Bath Christmas Market
We went down into Bath on the bus yesterday ... intending just to do a cinema trip, but the day was lovely and we had a look around the Christmas market. Food and Drink stalls mixed in with stalls selling Christmas nicknacks, which extended around the cathedral and up to the market hall. See here ...

1851Pictures from a delegate
Conversation from last week: "I'm taking pictures because I've never been in this area, but why are YOU taking pictures" - a delegate on my course. "Because it's a beautiful area and I take a lot of pictures" - my reply. Mikkel has sent me a link to his pictures, and I told him while he was with ...

1821Autumn
We're into Autumn, and on a blustery Sunday we went out to show Chris's mother in law, visiting from South Africa, some of the local scenes in Wiltshire, and Bath and North East Somerset (BaNES). The hardier souls were out in the countryside - a handful of boats moving on the canal, fishermen, cyclists ...

1822Claverton Pump
What's inside this little building that sits over a back water of the River Avon just a few miles up river from Bath? A 25 foot wide water wheel, with each scoop on the wheel taking no less than half a ton of water [background], and a set of full functioning gears and flywheel - the whole being fully ...

1662Westonbirt Arboretum Postcode
The postcode for Westonbirt Arboretum is GL8 8QS. Why am I putting that on my blog? Because I was woken this morning - and not for the first time - by a phone call and a voice asking "what's the postcode of the Arboretum?". One of the hazards on having a strong online presence is that you'll come ...

1611Gauging point at entrance to Bristols Floating Harbour
What is a "GAUGE POINT"? This curious contraption is set on the point where the River Avon forks as it comes up into Bristol from Avonmouth - to the left is the true course of the river and to the right is the entrance lock at Cumberland Basin to the floating harbour. There are two gauge point devices ...

1612Comfy Chair - Floating Harbour, Bristol
Just occasionally, I get a few minutes to sit and relax ... and just occasionally I hand my camera to someone else to use so that I can appear in front of the camera rather than behind it. Here - it's rare - is one of those occasions where both happened at the same time. ...

848Bath - a tourist city on our doorstep
August Bank holiday - and a day out on Sunday revealed busy roads in the extreme; best to explore somewhere local. This summer, we've not travelled any great distances - not because we're looking to avoid all the chaos that's been going on at the airports, but because of 'the Manor project' that I mention ...

824Pictures of Avebury, Longleat and Dyrham
It's summer in Wiltshire, and in spite of being rushed off our feet with training (open source stuff), training (trying to save the local train service), and refurbishing a B&B into a hotel, we've both had a few chances to get out and take some pictures. This morning, I've spend a few minutes ...

680Letter Boxes
Spring is in the air, the days are getting longer and there are some great photos around! On Sunday afternoon, down in Bath, I was snapping away and I've added a few more local area pages to the Wiki - see the Royal Crescent and Farleigh Hungerford Castle for example. Some scenes just don't fit into ...
