Just as a browser uses your web server to process information, so your web server can access other services to complete its task. It could be looking up data on a database, contacting a credit card company to get payment authorisation, or grabbing the local weather for your client's home town.

PHP is an excellent stand alone language; it wasn't designed for that use, but it does a mighty fine job if you've already got files ...
